In Zen Buddhism, Anrakuji, along with Kenchouji in Kamakura, is one of the oldest Rinzai Zen temples in Japan. The wooden Hakkaku Sanjunoto is a landmark edifice, being the only wooden octagonal tower in Japan. On March 29th, 1952, it became the first national treasure in Nagano prefecture to be gazetted under the Cultural Properties Protection Law.

There are many things to do inside Anrakuji.
You can also take a walk in the forests growing in the lush green temple grounds.
